Hi, all:

Finally going to "bite the bullet" and build a detached garage here. Have the plans from the builder, and building permit was submitted. Construction won't start until the spring though Sad

I know I can't put a wood or pettet stove out there, and no NG available, so I think my only option is propane. (well of course electric....but)

The building will be 24 X 32, with 9' walls - no "attic-storage"

Just been starting to look on line for some ballpark #'s, and big surprise.... the BTU ratings and "# of square feet heated" don't seem to be correlating among the manufacturers (much like wood stoves)

Anyone have any suggestions on certain manufacturers, sizing, pitfalls or anything of that nature?

Thanks

Hey, I have just been installing propane here. My shop is 26x32. I installed the gas to the shop and just purchased a Modine Hawt-dawg heater for it. 75K/BTU. I've not installed it yet but have heard nothing but good words about them; and they are not too much more than the less expensive one's that Northern is selling. I paid $722 for the package which includes tstat, wire, fittings, heater and vent pipe. I got this package from wholesale greehouse (search google).
Hope this helps and Happy New Year.

it takes 1 cubic foot of air to release 100 btu from the gas fyi. in the case of a garage,i'd consider a ventless,100% efficient, heater while considering ventilation, humidity, & co alarm.
ventless is cheap , ceramic burners are best because they burn some of the nitrates created.

I probably should have updated the post prior to this. It's been a busy year. The garage is done, and I love having a place to get stuff organized, and can actually work on things during the winter.

I also had to replace the furnace in the house - previosly oil, and now propane, I did a Buderus wall hung unit for the house, but I have the exact same thing you suggested, Swesall - the Modine Hawt-Dawg 75k BTU heater in the garage.

Happy New Year, and I can tell you that you won't be dissapointed with its performance in your shop.
