I replaced all my regular light bulbs with those twist bulbs about 2 years ago. One thing I have noticed is that those twist bulbs do not last anywhere near as long as a regular bulb.
My average replacement for those twist bulbs have been 3 replaced out of 10 over the last year. For the regular bulbs it has been around 1 every 2 years. I thought this was strange, but the church I attend recently replaced all their regular bulbs with the twist and they are not doing any better, actually there are doing worst then me.
Now as for the reason why twists tend to burn out quicker may be dependent on how its used. Typically a florescent blub is left on for hours on end before being shut off, where as lights in a home setting are normally not left on for extended periods of time, so they are turned off and on repeatedly throughout a typical day which could shorten their lifespan.
Twist Bulb:
Benefits:
Saves money on my electricity typically around 1/5 the usage of a regular bulb.
Drawbacks:
Mercury how to dispose of the bulb?
Note: most people will just throw them in the trash and they will end up in the landfill.
Does not last as long as advertised for it usage.
Expensive compare to regular
Manufacturing waste
Regular Bulb:
Benefits:
Cheaper
Lasts longer then twist
Disposable without harming the environment
Drawbacks
Uses more electricity
My questions
Which is the true overall winner for being greener when you factor in disposal, manufacturing waste, and cost?
What are your opinions/experiences with these bulbs? _________________ Harman TL-300 |
